With the last tpa3255 based BMH3D proto nearing completion work has started on a production version. Front-panel form factor is with 100 x 100 mm similar to the current 3116 based version as currently being used in the Grown/Up enclosure however it's depth is 50 mm (3116 version : 30 mm) due to the use of larger capacitors and output coils. - 20dB motional feedback loop supporting both StarBass as ClingOn accelerometers. - The 3255 is set into 2.1 mixed mode with 1x BTL bass and 2x SE mide/high channels. - RMS power output 155W @ 8ohm, 255W @ 4ohms woofer channel, 35W @ 8ohm, 77W @ 4ohm mid and high channel. - External single 51V powersupply via XT30 connector. - Fixed analog sallenkey based 2nd order LR low/mid xover at 400hz, 4th order LR mid/high xover at 4Khz. - Symmetric mini XLR input and thru, maximum sensitivity -6dBu 330mV adjustable from the back. 3 individual class D channels, 2x amplification - 2.4 watt standby power consumption, automatic power on/off. - connection to drivers via 8pole microFIT connector, optional status led via 2 pole 2.54mm JST.

Did a tpa3255 version of my BMH3D Grown/Up 3 way module back in 2020 which got halted due to thermal issues, the tpa3116 cooling solution clearly didn't suffice for the 3255 hothead. Luckily I've found someone in my network with experience milling 6 mm aluminium so we're back in business

Can't wait to start building this 3 way design 😎

1 inch AD0161T4, one of Philips first dome tweeters. Hooked up a pair to get a feel for possible Xover choices, looks fine 3Khz up. Green #1, yellow #2, looks like Philips did a pretty good job at maintaining product tolerances. 1973. Wow.

7 inch AD7063M4S, whizzer cone equipped full range. Midrange candidate between 500~3K. Might remove the whizzer to get rid of the obvious breakup and let the AD0161 take over.

8 inch AD8066W4 woofer, pretty straight line between 80~500hz. Philips used them in 2 way systems upto 1K5.

Qbox sits a little above 1 because of the AD7063 compartment which should work fine with 12dB servo loop gain.
Doing some research into "acoustic radiation impedance", see https://testhifi.com/2019/02/11/acoustic-radiation-impedance/ for more details, in relation to my plans for a prosound servo system. Next to the obvious choice for larger drivers I'm also looking into pairing smaller drivers in parallel using some vintage drivers I have laying around. Good old Philips, miss you 🥹

The Little/One woofers are located on the sides in an impuls compensated setup to keep their operating axis perpendicular to the planar and thereby avoiding woofer vibrations from modulating the planar output

Rounded edges to minimize baffle diffraction, one of the planned measurments is to determine the influence of the rounded planar supports but initial listening doesn't reveal any irregularities yet.

@[1160178016:2048:Joppe Peelen] his d'Apolito unit appears to integrate nicely with it's side firing servo woofers.
Next to building the next batch of 20 Grown/Up's I've been working on this, my first SAOB (servo assisted open baffle) prototype, sporting a magnetostatic mid/high unit build by Joppe Peelen paired with two impuls compensated little/one servo woofers.

The prototype measures H44, W22 and D20 cm, is powered by the same Piratelogic BMH3D 3 way module as being used with my Grown/Up enclosures. Xovers sit at a 2nd order @ 400hz and 4rd order @ 4Khz. First listening tests reveal a true open baffle character but without the dimensions that normally accompany a f3 of 40hz.

Got some mail the other day, although I love the fact that there is an ever increasing number of people starting attempts at building servo enclosures I do feel there's a need for bit of warning here: "Hi there, I've managed to gather some nice drivers to make some speakers and the idea of implementing your servo circuit / accelerometer in a project is always lingering in the back of my head. The one I first want to start with is a mid size three way with Accuton drivers." Designing & building servo drive systems requires a thorough understanding of and working experience with the underlying electronics. An engineering degree and experience with component level board repair is strongly advised. Hence my advise not to start your servo journey with expensive drivers but use some budget drivers to experiment on first !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! https://piratelogic.nl/data/docs/products/eve/piratelogic.eve.2020.0.manual.en.pdf

We've been silent because there was some major catching up to do with getting delayed parts into postponed deliveries and although still not fully out of the woodworks things are clearing up. Despite economic turbulence our sales numbers are still up resulting in our test rig showing growth beyond domestic proportions, time to start looking for some real demo space. The long awaited LS3/mfb subs are now scheduled for Xmas 2022, sorry for the delay.

Good news for DIY mfb lovers, the newly developed SERVO/DRIVE module has survived it's first tests and is performing wonderfully. This 1st proto contains a 2way MFB system with 12dB servo loop, 2nd order Sallen Key xover, 2nd order high pass and includes an onboard Tpa3116 class D amplifier on a 66x50 cm PCB. Connect a tweeter and modified woofer, hookup 24V and a signal source and you are good to go.

I expect the next proto to become available for general consumption by Xmas this year and will be sold as a kit including the module and a StarBass V or ClingOn accelerometer. A youtube tutorial on howto modify a woofer is in the making. Pricing will be announced shortly and is targeted between 200 and 250 euro per set of two.

Using the weekend to relax, sit back and enjoy some listening test with the original Little/One (top), the Mk2 with ScanSpeak & SB acoustics drivers and the Grown/Up 3 way systems. First impression is that except for the extra Grown/Up SPL the low note performance is pretty much identical between the lot. The real difference comes with the imaging depth and overall quality of the mid/high notes with the Little/One Mk2 performing significantly better then its predecessor.

Grown/Up development has also made a considerably leap forward with the new tpa3255 based bmh3d module offering increased power, spl and control.

Just a quick update on what's brewing:

- The first listening tests with our SBacoustics tweeter and ScanSpeak woofer equipped Little/One Mk2 have finished, it's new drivers together with a xover lift to 3400hz have resulted in a remarkable sonical improvement over the original design. The bass performance remained identical but there is a clear improvement in female voice reproduction and overall high note resolution.

- The original Little/One has also received an update in the form of a newly developed accelerometer, the Stripper, with a decreased addition to Mms of just 1 gram (StarBass 54 = 3.5 grams) allowing it's Xover to be increased from 1500 to 2400hz, measurement details will follow on youtube.

- Our 3rd TPA3255 based Grown/Up amplifier module prototype has survived thermal testing, I hope to order the first release candidate pcb's within a week or 2.

- The raw power of the tpa3255 based Grown/Up module plus the popular demand for a stand alone Sub woofer solution has led to the development of a single channel servo subwoofer solution capable of delivering upto 315 into 4 or 495 Wrms into 2 ohms running of a single 48Vdc psu. ETA is xmas 2021.

Last but not least we're building a separate shop for module sales under the name ServoLabs.

Morten from Denmark asked what the best spot would be for a ClingOn accelerometer to be fitted into his JBL2241 driver and made this nice infographic, love it 😎 Location A on top of the voicecoil former is the most ideal location from a linearity / basestrain perspective but requires cutting the dustcap. Location B is less ideal due to possible pickup of dustdome resonances and flexing of the sensor base. Location C increases the risk of picking op partial cone movement - breakup and also posses the risk of introducing an asymmetrical load to the VC. Location D is our favourite for now.

One of the Grown/Up design goals is to separate the xover and correction logic from the power amplification to allow the module to be used with a large variety of systems. One of the many possible combinations is shown below where the bass channel is powered by a TPA3116 in power BTL mode delivering upto 100watts in 2ohms combined with a standard stereo module delivering upto 50 watts into the mid and high channels. Although by no means high-end it's pretty surprising what these cheap modules are capable of, especially with the stock output filters modded to match the connected drivers impedances.

Like with any other loudspeaker system one of the main design challenges is with integrating the low, mid and high drivers into something resembling a point source. One route is to use coaxial drivers like Genelec does with their Ones. An alternative route worth investigating is the combination with a planar drivers like electrostats or magnetostats.

"M-Force redefines the notion of a traditional transducer, with its parallel moving magnets generating linear movement, surpassing all the limitations brought by the need of purposely wasting power in order to move the mass of a moving coil. "In studio use, speakers have to survive things like when you PFL a bass drum or bass guitar and it comes through at peak level, or you select a drum overhead just as someone smashes a cymbal and you haven't set the mic levels yet. It's quite a design challenge on top of pure performance..." True, a flat FR is only the beginning.

The Little/One electronics run of 24V which allows for mobile use using these 18650 li-ion cells. A 6S2P setup with 3400mAh cells contains 163Wh, enough energy for upto 4 hours @ full power.

Great article by Erno Borbely : " I use DC coupling whenever possible, because I don’t like “capacitor sound” and also because I am “allergic” to the prices of so-called high-end capacitors."

Busy building my first Revision/One 2015 ...
Oct 05, 2015 10:22:00am
Planned for Xmas 2015, the new #revone Revision/One 2015. Shown below is beta 1, I expect the release candidate to be ready in a few weeks.

It's form factor hasn't changed so it will still fit snugly into your old 22RH532, 22RH544 and 22RH567 motional feedback enclosures. But inside are all the lessons learned from the Rev/One 2014, the standby logic has been fixed, the high note darlingtons have been upgraded to a bdx pair similar to the one used in the mid note channel. The highnote output capacity has been increased as well as it's bootstrap cap. The original 544 mid & tweeter protection has been added,

Another major change is the use of Vishay 256 series snapin capacitors for the power supply and low-note amp output. These caps combine excellent ESR figures with just 2 soldering points - a big improvement over the 60+ for the 2014 model.

The pcb floorplan has been further optimized, the box connector has been moved down to avoid the cable from damaging while closing the door. The standby logic has been moved to the middle to minimize mains cabling lengths.
